Blueberry, Belly Fat and Diabetes

June 10, 2010

A recent study at the University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center points that a diet enriched in blueberry can help reduce diabetes risk and belly fat.

Blueberry Benefits
Blueberries are one of the most nutritious foods on this planet. They are high in fiber and contain naturally occurring phytochemicals which can do wonders for your health. As the sugar content is low in blueberries, they improved glucose control. They are also rich in vitamins A and C, zinc, potassium, iron, calcium and magnesium.

Blueberry and the Rats Study
The researchers studied the effect of blueberries on laboratory rats which were given the blueberry-enriched powder. It was found after three months that the rats who received the blueberry as powder in their diet had lower triglycerides, decreased cholesterol and less abdominal fat.

In fact, they also showed improved fasting glucose and insulin sensitivity. This positive effect is thought to be due to the presence of high level of phytochemicals blueberries contain.
